Fractional R&D Director
A fractional R&D director takes responsibility for a company's R&D a few days a month. The company accesses group-level leadership experience without a full-time hire.
Definition
A fractional R&D director is an experienced executive who leads a company's research and development on a fractional basis: a few days a week or a month, depending on need. They make decisions, manage teams, run the project portfolio and report to the CEO — exactly like a full-time director.
Also known as outsourced R&D director, fractional R&D leadership, fractional CTO or fractional CRO (Chief R&D Officer) depending on the scope.
When to consider it
- The company's size does not yet justify a full-time position
- An internal R&D director needs to be recruited: fractional leadership bridges the gap
- Specific deep expertise is needed for a defined period
- A deeptech startup wants operational leadership without a heavy payroll line
Typical engagement format
The engagement starts with a diagnostic of the R&D function and current projects. It leads to a roadmap connected to the company's strategy. The director then works on an agreed rhythm: typically two to four days a month, with more intensive sequences depending on project phases.
